How to free up storage on your phone without deleting photos

REALReal: this changes something for you today.

A full phone gets slow and stops installing updates. Before deleting memories, clear the real space wasters.

  1. WhatsApp media: in WhatsApp storage settings, review large files and forwarded videos.
  2. App cache: clear cache for big apps like social media and browsers.
  3. Offline downloads: old movies, playlists and maps you no longer need.
  4. Unused apps: uninstall apps you have not opened in months.
  5. Duplicate photos and screenshots: most gallery apps can find them for you.

Back up, then remove

Turn on cloud photo backup, let it finish on Wi-Fi, then use the free up space option so originals stay safe in the cloud.

Biggest quick win for most people: WhatsApp. Settings, Storage and data, Manage storage shows forwarded videos and files sorted by size. Clearing just that often frees several GB.

See what is using space

On Android, open Settings, then Storage, to see space used by apps, images, videos and other files. On iPhone, open Settings, General, iPhone Storage. Start with the biggest category; small apps rarely matter.

WhatsApp and other chat apps

Chat apps are often the largest space users because of forwarded videos and photos from groups. In WhatsApp, open Settings, Storage and data, Manage storage. Sort by size, review large files and clear group media you do not need. Turn off media auto-download for groups to stop the problem coming back.

Photos without losing memories

  1. Turn on backup in Google Photos or iCloud Photos and wait until it finishes on Wi-Fi
  2. Use the free up space option to remove copies already backed up
  3. Delete screenshots, blurry duplicates and old memes in one sweep
  4. Keep an offline copy of very important photos on a computer or external drive

Apps and their hidden data

Social media and streaming apps store large caches and offline downloads. Clear the cache of big apps on Android, remove offline downloads you have already watched, and uninstall apps you have not opened in months. On iPhone, Offload unused apps keeps your data but removes the app itself.

Why phones slow down when full

Phones need free space for updates, temporary files and the system itself. When storage is almost full, apps crash, the camera may refuse to save, and updates fail. Keep at least 10 to 15 percent free.

Frequently asked questions

Is a memory card a good solution? On phones that support it, a good microSD card is fine for photos, music and videos. Apps run better from internal storage.

What is System or Other storage? It includes caches, logs and temporary files. It often shrinks after a restart or an update.

Do a five minute storage clean-up once a month. It keeps the phone fast and stops the storage full warning at the worst moment.
