How to keep your laptop battery healthy for years

REALReal: this changes something for you today.

Laptop batteries wear out with time and heat. A few habits slow that down noticeably.

  1. Avoid sitting at 100 percent all day. Many laptops have a battery care or charge limit setting around 80 percent; turn it on if you work plugged in.
  2. Keep it cool: do not use it on a bed or pillow that blocks the vents.
  3. Do not let it drain to zero often.
  4. Use the original or a properly rated USB-C charger.
  5. Keep the BIOS and drivers updated, as power management improves over time.

Check battery health on Windows

Open Command Prompt and run: powercfg /batteryreport. Open the file it creates and compare Design capacity with Full charge capacity.

Why batteries wear out

Laptop batteries are lithium-ion cells. Each charge cycle, high temperature and long periods at 100 percent slowly reduce how much energy they can hold. After a few years, a battery that once lasted eight hours may manage five. This is normal ageing, but habits make a big difference to how fast it happens.

Charge limit settings by brand

Many manufacturers include a setting that stops charging at around 80 percent when you mostly work plugged in. It may be called battery care, conservation mode, battery health charging or adaptive charging, and it is usually found in the manufacturer's control app or in Windows or macOS battery settings. Turn it on if your laptop lives on a desk.

Heat is the biggest enemy

  • Avoid leaving the laptop in a hot car or in direct sun
  • Do not game or edit video on a soft surface that blocks vents
  • Clean dust from vents once or twice a year
  • In very hot rooms, a simple cooling pad helps

Reading your battery report

On Windows, run powercfg /batteryreport in Command Prompt and open the HTML file it creates. Compare Design capacity with Full charge capacity. If full charge capacity is below about 70 percent of design capacity, a battery replacement will bring back noticeably longer runtime. On a Mac, open System Settings, Battery, and check Battery Health.

When to replace the battery

Replace it when runtime no longer fits your day, if the laptop shuts down suddenly at a decent percentage, or if you notice any swelling. A swollen battery can push up the keyboard or trackpad; stop using the laptop and get it to a service centre quickly.

Frequently asked questions

Is it bad to keep my laptop plugged in all the time? Modern laptops manage this better than older ones, and a charge limit setting reduces wear further.

Should I drain the battery fully once a month? Not for modern lithium-ion batteries. Occasional full cycles only help recalibrate the percentage reading.

Keep it cool, avoid sitting at 100 percent all day, and your battery will age much more slowly.
