Monitor buying guide: resolution, refresh rate and panel types explained
HARDWAREA monitor lasts longer than most PCs, so it is worth choosing carefully. Three specs matter most.
Resolution
- Full HD (1080p): fine up to about 24 inches
- QHD (1440p): the sweet spot at 27 inches for work and gaming
- 4K: sharp text and great for photos and video, needs a stronger graphics card for games
Refresh rate
60Hz is fine for office work. 120Hz to 165Hz makes scrolling and games feel much smoother. Higher is mainly for competitive gamers.
Panel type
- IPS: good colours and viewing angles, the safe all-rounder
- VA: deep contrast, good for movies in dark rooms
- OLED: perfect blacks and stunning colour, costs more
Check the ports too. A USB-C port with power delivery lets one cable charge and connect a laptop.
