USB-C explained: why not every cable is the same
HARDWAREUSB-C describes the shape of the plug, not what the cable can do. Two cables that look identical can behave very differently.
- Some only charge slowly and transfer data at old USB 2.0 speeds
- Some support fast charging up to 60W or 100W and beyond
- Some carry video to a monitor; many cheap ones do not
For a laptop, buy a cable rated for its charger wattage. For an external monitor or fast SSD, check that the cable lists video or high-speed data support.
