What is an NPU, and does your next laptop need one?
MIXEDMixed: useful for some people, depends on how you use it.
HARDWARENPU stands for neural processing unit. It is a small part of the chip built to run AI tasks using very little power.
What it is good at
- Background blur and eye-contact effects on video calls
- Live captions and noise removal
- Some photo tools and on-device assistant features
What still needs the CPU or graphics card
Gaming, video editing and most local AI models that people actually download still lean on the graphics card and RAM. An NPU helps battery life for small AI jobs. It does not replace a good GPU.
Buy for RAM, screen and battery first. Treat the NPU as a nice extra, not the reason to pay more.
