Dark mode: does it really save battery?

PHONESDark mode is often sold as a battery saver. That is only partly true.
When it saves power
On OLED and AMOLED screens, black pixels are switched off, so dark mode can save meaningful battery, especially at high brightness.
When it does not
On LCD screens, the backlight stays on for every pixel, so dark mode saves little or nothing. Many budget laptops and some phones use LCD.
Use dark mode because it is comfortable for your eyes at night. Treat any battery saving as a bonus that depends on your screen type.
